Aletheia went through a modified version of James Dobson's Preparing for Adolescents series.

January 7, 2011 - Growing up in the body of Christ
Chris Lim
What did you learn?
"I feel that we have to be truthful because we love one another so much that we should be able to accept people for who they are. In other words, we should pretend to be nice in front of other people when we actually don't really like the way they behave or their attitudes. So, if we love them, we should speak the truth and tell them to change for the better. And when we speak the truth, it will bring us closer together, closer to God."
Ephesians 4:15 Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ.

January 14, 2011 - Conformity (Preparing for Adolescents)
Ira Lam
Prior to the lesson: What do you think about conformity? Peer pressure?
"Conformity means acting according to accepted standards and it is important in teen years because that is when we are pressured into the ways of this world. I think that we need to know the boundaries for what we can and cannot do. Peer pressure is also dangerous because normally it is pressure to do something bad like smoke, drink, etc. Conformity to peer pressure could keep me from doing what is right because as teenagers friends and being ale to fit in are really important. Sometimes people choose to do something wrong instead of being an outcast and doing something right."

What did you learn?
"I learned that we should not conform to the will of people or to the ways of this world but to the will of God and the ways of God. Also, when we are experiencing pressure from people around us, we should stop and think, "would God want me to do this?""
Romans 12:2:
Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

January 21, 2011 - Identity (Preparing for Adolescents)
King Lam
Prior to the Lesson: When making decisions, who influences you the most?
"To be truthful, my parents influence me the most. I guess that's because their opinion matters to me, and the fact that if I don't do what they approve, I could get in a lot of trouble....The thing that second influences me the most is my peers. Being a teen, your image and what other people think of you is really important....It's really bad, but the thing that influences me the least is God. I mean, the Bible doesn't say "Don't watch too much Hulu!" or "Stop watching dramas!"...I know I have it all backwards. The order of the most influential things should be: 1. God 2. Parents 3. Peers God should always be #1 in my life."
Then, after a little more thought, this came to our Aletheian's mind:
What agreement is there between the temple of God and idols? For we are the temple of the living God.
2 Cor. 6:16a

What did you learn?
"I learned that identity is through relations and that I identity myself as God's creation."
Exodus 3:14 God replied to Moses, “I Am Who I Am. Say this to the people of Israel: I Am has sent me to you.”

January 28, 2011 - Relating to Parents/Guardians
Timothy Teopilus
Prior to the Lesson: How do you think God wants you to relate to your parents/guardians?
"I think God wants us to relate to our parents through our struggles. We face many challenges and difficulties as a young adult/adult, and often times consider our problem to be the greatest in the world, but we should not lose sight that our parents are also going through challenges in life. So I think the best way to relate to one another is in sharing our burdens and difficulties and together lifting them up to Jesus. The opposite is also true! Nothing cheers a mother/father/guardian like being let in on something joyous that happens!"

What did you learn?
“First of all, God tells us to obey our parents. Obeying our parents is a command from God. So, we should obey our parents not only because it's a command, but it pleases God.”
Colossians 3:20-21 Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord. Fathers, do not embitter your children or they will become discouraged.

February 4, 2011 – Sex, Food and God
Chris Lim
 Prior to the Lesson:
1) What is addiction?
2)What would you say to a friend who struggles with one (like games or dramas)?
"I think that an addiction is where someone is constantly attached to something and can't stand to be apart from it. So, if a friend struggles with an addiction, I would tell them to talk to someone and try to help them slowly get away from their addiction…"

What did you learn?
"Well, what I learned was that addiction was pretty much the obsession of anything that pulled me away from God or was bad (like alcohol, drugs, etc.). It could happen with anything, and is a hard habit to break. Most addictions come with the need to hide any pain."
Colossians 2:20-21 Since you died with Christ to the elemental spiritual forces of this world, why, as though you still belonged to this world, do you submit to its rules: 'Do not handle! Do not taste! Do not touch!'?

February 5, 2011 – Shabu Shabu dinner with Oikos for Chinese New years
Oikos
Worship will be lead by Aletheia and Shabu shabu dinner is provided by Oikos. This is a fun event to celebrate Chinese New Years (February 3, 2011) with lots of food and even a fun activity/game.

February 11, 2011 – “Meaning of Love”
Aletheian Parents
Prior to the Lesson: What do you think the meaning of true love is?
"When asked, one Aletheian wasn't sure how to answer so the dictionary was where this person found the meaning of love.
On dictionary.com the meaning of love turns out to be the following:
love [luhv] (noun, verb): 1. (n) a profoundly tender, passionate affection for another person."

What did you learn?
"I learned that love is not something that people are supposed to make light of. People can`t just go and marry the first person they think they like in a short period of time because it has a big impact on your life if you marry the wrong person. It is not easy to find the person you are supposed to marry, thus you should spend several years dating before getting married because if you marry in a short amount of time, you are more likely to find out things that you don`t like about the person."

For six weeks, Aletheia will be diving into the world of apologetics. Hopefully more Elders will step in to help teach and work with older Aletheians each week. Quotes from the Aletheians about their thoughts and learning are to come. Here's a sneak peak:

February 18, 2011 – Apologetic: Save Yourself: Discovering the Truth about Buddhism
Effendi and Diana
What comes to mind when you think of Buddhism?
"Buddah, flowers, Chinese people and mediation comes to mind."

"When I think of Buddhism, I think of those Chinese restaurants that have the fruits in front of the statue of Buddha. I also think of this TV show called Avatar that has some Buddhist references in it."

What did you learn?
"So, I learned that Buddhist and Christians handle their problems differently. Christians go to God with their problems because they know, God is the most powerful. But Buddhists take matters into their own hands and believe that they can handle everything on their own."

February 25, 2011 – Apologetic: Grace or Duty: Discovering the Truth about Hinduism
Ira and Michelle
What comes to mind when you think of Hinduism?
“When I think of Hinduism, I think of one of my Indian friends who chose to follow Hinduism because he liked that there were many gods that he could pray to.  I also think of reincarnation of a person in a later life, karma, and yoga.  An interesting thing about Hinduism is that it is very open to pretty much any belief, so people can basically decide what they want to believe is true and still consider themselves Hindu or can consider themselves nonreligious and still believe in some Hindu beliefs.”

What did you learn?
"I learned that Hinduism is a religion in which you have to do everything for yourself. To reach a higher caste, you have to do good works and hopefully, you will get promoted. But that doesn't really work because we can't do everything by ourselves, and nobody's perfect. Luckily, we have a Savior who is."
March 4, 2011 – Apologetic: Will the Real God Please Stand Up: New Age Movement
Ayu and Nicole L.
What comes to mind when you think of the New Age Movement?
“From what I think, it sounds like selective hearing. People only choose what they want and are ignorant to any other thing.”

What did you learn?
"What I have leaned today is that the new age movement is a pick and choose religion.  Most centers the "new age" or yourself, not Christ."

 Ephesian 5 1-10
1 Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children 2 and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

3 But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people. 4 Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving. 5 For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person—such a person is an idolater—has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.[a] 6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God’s wrath comes on those who are disobedient. 7 Therefore do not be partners with them.

8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light 9 (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) 10 and find out what pleases the Lord. 11 Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. 12 It is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. 13 But everything exposed by the light becomes visible—and everything that is illuminated becomes a light.

March 11, 2011 – Apologetic: A Religion of Law: Discovering the Truth about Moslem
P. Tim and Spencer
What comes to mind when you think of Muslim?
“I think that Muslim is a very dark religion that is very religious and disrespectful to women and other religions. I also think they are very strict.”

What did you learn?
"I learned that Muslims belief is very similar to what Christians believe, except that Christians build a relationship with God instead of just following guidelines that may or may not get them into heaven. Muslims hope that one day they will make it into heaven while Christians know that they will be united with Christ one day."

March 18, 2011 – Apologetic: Wanted: Messiah – Truth about Judaism
Caroline and Ria
What comes to mind when you think of Judaism?
“I don't know much about it, but I think of the star of David and then I wonder whether Jewish and Judaism are the same thing.”

What did you learn?
"I learned that "being Jewish" is something that is both cultural and a belief system. I also learned that Jesus fulfilled the prophecies from the Old Testament in unexpected ways, in ways that none of the people of that time understood. But God had a bigger plan that went beyond what they thought, to fulfill something way more epic than what they thought was even possible."

March 25, 2011 – Apologetic: Want to know if they kept Knocking: Cults
King Lam and Marco
What comes to mind when you think of cults?
“When I think of cults, what comes to mind is groups that practice different religions like Greek religions or Roman religions. Cults are like small groups of people who practice different religions that do not have the same ideas or god(s) as us.”

What did you learn?
"I learned that cults are people who depend mainly on their own works and there is no heaven for sure. I also learned that cults take our bible, the truth, and twist the words. Although they believe Jesus is the first created they do not believe he is God as well."

APRIL 1, 2011 Will be TEA GAME NIGHT! Don't miss out and join us for an evening of fellowshiping with one another.

April 8, 2011 - Mark 1:9-13 Baptism of Jesus
P. Kolinus and Nicole L.
Summarize the passage and share what it says about who Jesus is.
"Even though Jesus is God, he was made like us. So he was tempted and baptized."

What did you learn?
"I learned that baptism is just a public sign that shows that you have stopped sinning and that you moving towards God, not that you are a better person 100% assured. I also learned that Jesus went through Baptism to just announce that he is now ready to become a minister. I now know that public baptism is only physical and that only Jesus can really baptize with the Holy Spirit."

April 15, 2011 - Mark 2:13-17 Calling of Levi
Victor Tjok and Ria
Summarize the passage and share what is says about who Jesus is.
"Jesus calls Levi, a tax collector, to be his diciple. Jesus eats at Levi's house with other tax collectors, and declares that "I came not to call the righteous, but sinners."

What did you learn?
"Jesus is the son of God who is fully God and fully Man! He is a man who hates sin but loves the sinner. I learned that Jesus loves us no matter who we are or what we have don. He came to earth to call on the sinners instead of the people who are righteous so that the sinners can be saved. This is a very good news for us all because there is now hope in this life through Jesus Christ!"

April 22, 2011 - Good Friday
=No Aletheia=

April 29, 2011 - Mark 3:31-35 Mother and Bothers of Jesus
Lukas Tjandra and Michelle
Summarize the passage and share what it says about who Jesus is.
"Jesus thinks of everyone around him as his brothers and sisters. He doesn't just classify his flesh and blood as his family. Jesus loves all of us, equally."

What did you learn?
"I learned that becoming a child of God and part of God's family is not just believing, but having a good and strong relationship with God. I also learned that Jesus is the reason we can be part of God's family and that he was doubted, even by his own family. So, when we are struggling with family issues, we can always know that we are part of God's family."

May 6, 2011 - Mark 4:35-41 Jesus calming the storm
P. Kolinus and Marco
Summarize the passage and share what it says about who Jesus is.
"The Disciples didn't have a strong faith before Jesus calmed the storm. It seems that Jesus is upset that they, the disciples still don't have faith."

What did you learn?
"Even if you have struggles or go through storms, trust in Jesus.
Jesus will get you through it all.
Storms are scary.
Seek him no matter what kind of reaction I have. Storms are a reminder to trust in God and not to lose faith. Trust in God and know that He will get me through it all. We have to trust in Him and not question Him."

May 13, 2011 - Mark 5:21-43 Waking of the dead girl
Victor Tjok and Nicole C.
Summarize the passage and share what it says about who Jesus is.
"The passage shows me how amazing Jesus is because he cured the woman and the daughter. Also, I think that he is humble because in the end, Jesus told people not to tell anyone."

What did you learn?
"I learned that when we are touched by God, we obey him. I also learned that faith isn't an easy, or a small thing. Asking for something doesn't necessarily mean that we'll get it automatically."

May 20, 2011 - Mark 6:45-56 Jesus walking on the water to get to his disciples
Lukas Tjandra and Diana
Summarize the passage and share what it says about who Jesus is.
"Jesus is very caring because he stopped and helped his disciples while they were stranded on the boat. He is very powerful because the wind stopped right after he got into the boat. When he got off the boat a lot of people came to him knowing that he could perform miracle and heal them if they just touched his cloak."

What did you learn?
"I learned that we we have to develop a good and strong relationship with God and we have to have a strong faith in him. Also, I learned that some of the people in the passage we learned about didn't believe in Jesus even though they saw so many of His miracles. Faith is not based on what we see, but it is based on something that we don't see. In other words, true strong faith does not rely on signs and miracles."

June 6, 2011 - Check Point: Review of Mark 1-6
Nicole C.

June 10, 2011 - Graduation Night Preparations
=No Aletheia=

June 17, 2011 - Mark 7:14:23
Indra Pramono and Marco
Summarize the passage and share what it says about who Jesus is.
"Jesus said to listen and understand. People are not defiled by what comes into them because it doesn't go into the heart but into the stomach and out through the intestines. People are defiled by what comes out of them. Jesus is all-Knowing."

What did you learn?
"God put the law in the old testament because he wanted to protect us from things we didn't know or understand. Then he said it was ok to eat unclean foods so that Israel could spread the word of God to the outside world because they eat unclean foods."

June 24, 2011 - Mark 8:22-26
Ayu Rahardjo and Diana
Summarize the passage and share what it says about who Jesus is.
"Jesus went to Bethsaida and he healed a blind man there. He healed the blind may by leading the man out of the village, spitting on the man's eyes and then put his hands on the man's eyes. Jesus put his hands on the man twice, the first one partially working and the second one fully healing him. After the healing, Jesus told the man not to enter the village. Jesus does not want to attract too much attention and he is able to heal the sick. Two questions linger after reading this passage: why did it take two lay on hands? Also, what does this passage mean about Jesus?"

What did you learn?
"We learned about how we are like the disciples and focus on our weaknesses and unpleasant circumstances instead of remembering that Jesus is with us and He will provide for all that we need. We also learned that self-righteousness easily corrupts us like how yeast spreads. Jesus is the one who opens our eyes and gives us faith to see that He is God."

July 1, 2011 - Mark 9:14-29
Jeremy Djajadi and Nicole L.
Summarize the passage and share about what it says about who Jesus is.
"Jesus' disciples cannot take the evil spirit out of a child, and the child is brought before Jesus. Jesus, seeing that his disciples could not rebuke the demon inside of the little boy, says "O faithless generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him to me." They do, and Jesus drives the demon out of the little boy."

What did you learn?
“I learned that you need faith. Some demons need prayer to get them out of the body and you need faith. Jesus is the one who healed the man’s son. All you need is faith to do anything because God can do anything. Therefore we have to trust and rely on God.”

July 8, 2011 - Mark 10:35-45
Jeremy Djajadi and Spencer
Summarize the passage and share about what it says about who Jesus is.
"This passage is about John and James asking Jesus about sitting at his right and left hands in his glory. When James and John ask Jesus this, Jesus tells them that they can’t because the position to be at his right and left hands are for those who it has been prepared for. Then he tells them that the Son of Man didn’t come to be served but to serve."

What did you learn?
"First we learned about the two disciples asking Jesus if they can sit at his right and left hand in his glory. Then Jesus tells them that they don't know what they're getting themselves into by asking that. Jesus talks about how being king means to serve others and that we should put others before ourselves. So, in order to be more like Jesus who died for our sins and put us before himself, we need to put others before ourselves."

July 15, 2011 - Mark 11:1-11
Tim Teopilus and Ian
Summarize the passage and share about what it says about who Jesus is.
"I think this passage is talking about Palm Sunday. Jesus enters Jerusalem and the crowd is shouting Hosanna. From this passage I think that Jesus is very Kingly and all-knowing because He knew that the disciples would find the colt and bring it back."

What did you learn?
"I learned that God let himself be humiliated on a cross so that we won't feel lonely and bad whenever we ourselves are humiliated. Also God reveals things only at the proper time, which is why Jesus went to Jerusalem to reveal that he is the king and the messiah that everyone was waiting for when he did. He did it at that time to show that everything is according to God's will and timing."

July 22, 2011 - Mark 12:13-17
Ayu Rahardjo and Michelle
Summarize the passage and share about what it says about who Jesus is.
“According to what the Pharisees said in this passage, Jesus is a man of truth. Jesus knew what the Pharisees were thinking because he is the son of God. Instead of just answering the Pharisees directly, he told them in such a way that they would have to find the answer themselves and discern what is right and what is wrong. So, from this passage, we can tell that Jesus may not answer us directly, he wants us to use good judgment.”

What did you learn?
"I learned that if we want what God wants or we have a good relationship with him, everything will fall into place. If the Pharisees and the Herodians knew this they wouldn't have asked the question they did in the first place. We have to have a good relationship with God and he will grant us wisdom."

July 29, 2011 - Buffer
TEA Ice-skating Outing

August 5, 2011 - Check point: Review

August 12, 2011 - Mark 13:32-27
Ira Lam and Diana
Summarize the passage and share about what it says about who Jesus is.
“I think it’s talking about how you should always be prepared and not put something off because you never know when God will come back. We should treat every day as if God will be coming. This makes me see that Jesus is the mastermind, is unexpected and mysterious.”

What did you learn?
"We learned that only God knows (and not even the son knows) when he will return. Wars, famines, and bad stuff will happen because it has to, but it doesn't mean that he's coming already. We must prepare by getting ourselves ready and armored - equipping ourselves."

August 19, 2011 - Buffer
TEA fellowship with small devotion and sharing

August 26, 2011 - Mark 14:53-65
King Lam and Michelle
Summarize the passage and share about what it says about who Jesus is.
"Jesus was faced with the false testimonies of people who wanted to crucify him, yet he didn't attempt to prove them wrong. He stayed silent and said only what he knew was right, even if it meant death. Jesus believed in what he knew was right and didn't lie to get his way out of it or speak some protest against the false testimonies, so all I can really say is that he is a great God with infinite patience and righteousness."

What did you learn?
"I learned that Jesus had to endure so many painful things for our sins and that Jesus is also the Son of Man. God is a God of high places and of low."

September 2, 2011 - Mark 15:1-15
Ira Lam and Victoria
Summarize the passage and share about what it says about who Jesus is.
"On the third day after Jesus' death, Mary Magdalene and Mary mother of James, went early in the morning to anoint the body of Jesus in the tomb. Both of the women were wondering who would roll away the stone in front of the tomb, and as they approached, they say that the stone was rolled away, and the body was not there. Upon entering the tomb, they saw an angel sitting, and he told them to go tell all the Apostles that Jesus is coming to Galilee, and his disciples will see him there. The two women left, bewildered."

What did you learn?
"We have to be obedient and forgive and wait for God to use us. Good things happen to those who wait. You have to pray to God if you are worried."

September 9, 2011 - TAFF Preparations
Amanda

September 16, 2011 - Mark 16:1-8
Nicole C.
Summarize the passage and share about what it says about who Jesus is.
“Mary, Mary, and Salome went looking for Jesus but they found the huge stone that concealed Jesus’ tomb rolled away. An angel told them to tell the disciples that Jesus was alive but they were too scared and kept quiet. Jesus was important because there was an angel and He rose from the dead.”

What did you learn?
"I learned that sometimes we are like the women, confused and bewildered, we want to proclaim the gospel but sometimes we are afraid. Reflecting upon the resurrection however, we have hope that by God's grace, he can ignite our faith. Also, when we feel hopeless and we feel like we have failed, the resurrection can give us hope that Jesus controls everything and that through these kinds of experiences we can grow in him and learn to trust him."

September 23, 2011 - Review of the Book of Mark
Nicole C. and Indra P.

Aletheia went through the Book of Mark and ended with some time to think about what they had learned about and how it had impacted their own lives.

September 30, 2011 - Welcome New Aletheians
King Lam and Marco
This evening is kind of like an open house for parents and for new Aletheians to learn more about Aletheia as a fellowship and to get to know the Aletheians as well. If you have questions, this would be a great opportunity to ask in a group setting. Hope to see new faces!

October 7, 2011 - Movie Night
Ayu Rahardjo and Diana
Come watch a movie with us (TEA)

October 14, 2011 - Church History 1st-5th Century

Tim Teopilus and Ian
Who is Christ?
"Christ is our savior who died for our sins because he loves us. He also died for us willingly because it was the Lord's will. Christ is also our heavenly father and knows us and who uses us to shine his glory."

What did you learn?
"I learned about the history of past churches---where, how, and sort of when it originated, who had a hand in the rise of the church, and even got a minor geography lesson! For example, I now know where the Caspian Sea is located and how much land Alexander the Great had conquered and the size of the Roman empire. I also learned about some of the disciples' journeys from Jerusalem and something about this guy named Polycarp. It was one of the best history lectures ever because I learned a lot about the history of the church."

October 21, 2011 - Church History 5th-9th Century
Indra Pramono and Marco
What is the Great Schism? Why did it happen?
"The great schism in 1054 was a splitting of the Eastern and Western Church. This led to the creation of the Modern Roman Catholic church and the Eastern Orthodox church."

What did you learn?
"I learned about who Christ is. God the Father, the Son, and Holy Spirit are all one essence/substance, but three distinct persons. During the beginning of the church, church leaders debated about the true identity of Christ because they were still trying to establish Jesus' identity."

October 28, 2011 - Church History Reformation Era (16th Century)
Jeremy Djajadi and Spencer
What is the Reformation Era?
"I think that the Reformation Era is the time when the people split away from the Catholic church. This is where I believe Protestant was born."

What did you learn?
"I learned about how corrupt the Catholics were at that time and how Luther, Zwingli, and Calvin realized the corruption. They tried to fix it through reformations. Even though they had different background and were different people, it was their faith in Jesus Christ that brought their ideas together because they were based on scripture."

November 4, 2011 - Church History Wrap Up
Tim T.
What did you learn?
"I learned that the Bible is reliable because it has been tested and approved. The New Testament is based on Jesus, who bases his ministry on God the Father and the Old Testament. I also learned that as a reformed church, we put scripture above tradition, above reason, and above experience because scripture is the most reliable thing in the world since it is the Revealed Word of God."

November 11, 2011 -What does our Church believe in?
King L. and Chris L.
What did you learn?
"I learned that the Presbyterian Church has gone through a lot of struggles and controversies and that the reform wasn't as unified as I thought it was. We should always reform according to the scriptures and stay true to the Bible."

November 18, 2011 - Guest Speaker
P. Amos Oei
What did you learn?
"Don't worry about trying to find the meaning of life. Just believe that you are here for God's glory."

November 25, 2011 - Day after Thanksgiving
-No Aletheia-

December 2, 2011 - Guest Speaker
P. Johnny To
What did you learn?
"I learned that we have to forgive our parents for whatever they have done to us and we should not be criticizing them because that is not Christ-like. Although they are our parents, we still have to go by God's word because of the hierarchical "rainbow" that we should follow - God, government, and parents."

December 9, 2011 - Accountability Night
